Before I took the time to simplify and organize my pantry, it was a bit of a disaster. Bags of dried goods had spilled over, half-used ingredients were pushed to the back and forgotten, and I often found myself buying duplicates simply because I couldn’t see what I already had. Sound familiar?
As I’ve worked toward creating a cleaner, more efficient kitchen, I’ve learned a few things along the way. I’ve realized that I cook better (and feel more inspired) when my space is tidy and my ingredients are easy to find. I’ve designed my pantry with simplicity in mind, focusing on staple items I actually use rather than collecting ingredients for one-off recipes. Now, nothing goes to waste, everything has a place, and my kitchen feels like a space I want to be in.

Organizing my pantry allows me to quickly find what I need. By using clear jars, I can see exactly what I have stored. This ensures that food stays fresh while maximizing the space I have.
I focus on various storage solutions, to categorize items, give me at-a-glance inventory, and help to maintain cleanliness and freshness.
With thoughtful planning and the right containers, I make cooking a fun experience rather than a stressful chore.
Efficient Food Storage Solutions
Advantages of Using Jars
There’s so many benefits of storing food in smaller jars and large size jars. When we buy food in the store most of the pasta and some of the dried goods are kept in boxes that grabs our attention. There are designed for selling with big letters and colors to get our attention so that we buy their product. Not to mention, when you open the box, you might be surprised by how little is actually inside. That’s because many brands use oversized packaging on purpose. It’s a marketing trick designed to make the product look more substantial and appealing on the shelf than it really is. Using clear jars helps me to know exactly what I have and how much is there.

Another reason I like jars is they can be sealed well. Once we open a bag of lentils or beans all kinds of critters can find their way in there. Molds, bacteria, and more can all shorten the life of stored food as it’s exposed to the elements in the air. Sealing ingredients in a jar helps keep them fresh for much longer.
Glass is a better option for non toxic storage and I can have many other ways to use them. I like to store soups, rice and many other cooked food in the fridge in them. They can be organized easier and I really get to see the food so they wont be forgotten. When I use metal or other containers for the leftover it’s an out of sight out of mind case for me. For my larger jars, I store items like flour and pasta and other staples that we go trough quickly while cleaning them between refills.
I like using jars because they help me to be more efficient with storage and cooking. They make it easy to see how much food I have. No tricks, just the pure amount.
I add labels to the ones that may not be obvious what’s inside, but generally, I can see what’s in them and no label is required. For my pantry we created a narrow shelf because I get see the variety and nothing gets forgotten.

Vacuum Sealing for Longer Shelf Life
Vacuum sealing is an effective method for keeping my dry goods fresh. When I harvest from my garden I like to either freeze dry or dehydrate them and sealing them in the jars with this handy little gadget.

By removing air, I prevent spoilage and maintain flavor. This technique works great alongside my jars, allowing me to store food safely for a longer time.
Just keep in mind if you wanna use clear glass containers to store food you have to keep them in a dark place to preserve the nutrition, flavor and color.
Organizing Dry Goods
When I categorize my dry goods, I find it easier to access what I need. I created a narrow shelf on my pantry that would have been a dead space. These smaller shelves help me spread out the jars neatly and create a different group of ingredients in each row. I have a row for baking, nuts, beans, sweeteners etc..

I use different jars for grains, pasta, and various other staples. I also keep my baking supplies in a designated box for quick access when I’m ready to bake.
Keeping Containers Clean
To maintain my jars and containers, I wash them simply with soapy water. This ensures that they stay clean and safe for food storage.
I make it a habit to clean my containers regularly so I can avoid any contamination. Every time a jar is emptied I wash them before I refill them. For an expiration date I use a chalk marker to write directly on the jar, or sometimes I just cut off the date from the original container and either drop it in the jar or tape it to the bottom.
Spice Organization Methods
For spices, I store them upside down in jars to create a better seal. This method lets me see what I have without searching through drawers. The bottom of the jars work like a magnifying glass so you get a good view what you have in there.

In my new home I was lacking that flat drawer space so I adjusted my system. I use regular spice containers with a cute wooden lid but it comes with a tray. This helps the spices from sliding and if I know I’m spending time cooking multiple dishes, I just grab the whole tray and place it on the counter top for an easy use. Once I’m done using them they can go back to the dark drawer to protect the flavor and nutrition.

I also have ghee and lard in jars with a wax paper underneath to catch any grease, making it easier to maintain cleanliness.
Food Freshness and Produce Storage
Proper Storage for Potatoes and Onions
I keep potatoes and onions in a cool, dark place to prevent spoilage. These vegetables need a dry environment where air can circulate around them.
Using paper to wrap each item helps with ventilation. I often use recycled materials for this purpose. It’s an easy and eco-friendly solution. A basket or a hanging net from natural material helps the ventilation and it looks warm and neat. I opted with a hanging net because I get to use the empty space on the pantry wall and it’s at a perfect height as I wanna grab onion or potato for cooking in a hurry.

If I can’t find the specific organizers I prefer, I can always switch to similar shopping bags that serve the same function. Keeping my produce organized and off the counter helps me save space.
Reuse and Recycling Practices
I am a strong believer in recycling and reuse. I make use of items that I already have instead of buying new ones.
For example, I gather jars and boxes to keep my food fresh and organized. This way, I not only keep my kitchen clean but also do my part for the environment. Glass can be used endless times for multiple purposes and empty paper boxes a great way to separate potatoes and onions. If you have empty cracker boxes, I gently open them by the seam and turn them out to the more subtle brown color, then glue them back together for a more unified and cohesive look.
Specialized Storage for Pantry Items
Honey Storage and Pest Prevention
I keep my jars of honey stored in a box with a lid. This helps keep them safe from pests that occasionally show up.
I organize my food and dried goods in jars, and these boxes are perfect for easy refills.
Boxes to categorize
I like to use small wooden boxes from Ikea to store my baking essentials. . One box holds items like baking soda, baking powder, and flavorings. When I need to bake, I can quickly grab the entire box without searching through my pantry. Another box has all the vinegar and the next one gathers all the oils, ghee and such for cooking. These boxes help me to grab a group of ingredients easily as I’m cooking or baking. Cleanup is super easy as I just put the ingredients back and then whole box is moved once to the pantry.

Storing fruits
To store bananas and ripen them for smoothies we created a handy shelf above my countertop. It’s narrow so it’s not in the way, but it’s a perfect spot to make smoothies in the morning. Having an open shelf means the air can move around them easily so it stays fresh longer. Also the shelves divide the different type of fruits which can also effect the longevity. Mixed fruit bowls are pretty but the apple produces gases that ripens the other fruits faster so storing fruit like this separately ensures they stay fresher longer!

Creative and Space-Saving Ideas
Making Use of Vertical Space
I’ve found it helpful to use vertical space in my cabinets.
By stacking items on different shelves or using tall storage solutions, I can fit more in without cluttering the counters. It really makes getting to the items easier when organized well.
Smart Placement for Cleaning Supplies
More uses for jars…
I organize my cleaning supplies in a way that makes them easily accessible.
Just like my cooking ingredients, I use clear jars to store items like laundry detergent, oil to take care of my wooden furniture, baking soda, making it simple to see what I have. This system helps me find tools quickly while keeping everything arranged.

Utilizing Secondhand Finds
I love exploring secondhand stores for unique items. I found a shelf for just three dollars, which is perfect for storing my watercolors and essential oils. It keeps my things organized and out of the way, while still allowing me easy access when I need them. Secondhand stores have many great options for wooden boxes and baskets.
Repurposing Organizers
I often repurpose containers to enhance my storage.
I use glass jars for dry goods because they keep items fresh and tidy. Each jar has its own category, like pasta or grains, which makes it easy to grab what I need. I have a binder for my recipes that keeps everything clean and organized.
What I’ve Learned in Organizing My Pantry
Transforming my cluttered pantry into an organized, efficient space has made cooking easier and more enjoyable. I now use clear glass jars to store dry goods, which helps prevent waste, keeps ingredients fresh, and eliminates the guesswork of what I have on hand. Thoughtful storage strategies like vacuum sealing, spice trays, and vertical shelving help maximize space while keeping everything accessible. I also incorporate sustainable practices by reusing containers and repurposing boxes. With a place for everything from baking supplies to fresh produce, I’ve created a pantry that supports healthy meals, reduces stress, and brings joy to my daily routine.

Storing dried goods
Frequently asked…
I get this question a lot. What if I end up with a leftover and the whole bag doesn’t fit into a jar? Most of the time the amount in the bag or box matches the size of the glass jar. Shaking the jar also helps to settle the dried goods and you can add more in there. If I have a little leftover I just simply use it up while I refill my pantry. I put quinoa in the jar and I had a handful leftover that didn’t fit into the jar. I just cooked the quinoa and I had some leftover asparagus from the previous day I added some tomatoes, salt and olive oil and I mixed it with the then chilled quinoa. I created a side dish with in less then 20 minutes my pantry was refilled and no leftover. When I have more that doesn’t fit into the designated jar I just simply start another one. Just because we don’t fill it up to the top doesn’t mean we can not use another jar. The efficiency is still working because we use up all the space on the narrow shelf vertically. With the original box that they came in would have just as extra unused space in there but it would be harder to organize with the rest of the items.
